    Body Back is the newest program released from Stroller Strides founder Lisa Druxman. It is a results-based workout designed specifically for moms. Whether you  just had a baby or had a baby twenty years ago, it will help you get your body back.     For many children and families with autism, there are daily struggles to face and each one can feel like an uphill battle.  Alpine Learning Group, The EPIC School, Garden Academy and REED Academy are dedicated to easing these daily struggles and turning uphill battles into achievements. All four schools are located in Northern NJ and all monies raised from the Go the Distance for Autism Bike Event will support educational and  treatment programs for children and adults with autism. By collaborating on this event, we are using one voice to spread the message that everyone, from children to adults, can make a difference in the lives of individuals with autism and their families

    Natural Remedies for Cold Relief

    In addition to the basic precautions, like frequently washing your hands and sanitizing your work area, there are a few natural remedies you can use if you find yourself feeling a little under the weather.

    Blow your nose often. Getting germs out is the best thing to do. Don’t sniff mucus back into your throat, and be sure to wash your hands afterward.

    Take it easy. Resting when you aren’t feeling well or are first coming down with cold or flu symptoms helps your immune system better fight the battle. Allowing yourself to lay down under a blanket, reserving your energy for your immune system, can help shorten the duration of your symptoms.

    Drink hot liquids. Liquids are very important when you’re not feeling well, and staying hydrated should be a top priority. Drinking some hot liquids when possible helps, as the warmth will relieve nasal congestion and soothe irritated nasal passages.

    Gargle. If you have a sore throat, gargling can temporarily relieve your discomfort. You can gargle with salt water, or try some honey and lemon juice mixed with hot water. If you have a tickle in your throat, gargling with a tea that contains tannins, such as green or black tea, can help tighten the membranes and relieve the scratchiness.

    Get an extra pillow. Sleeping with your head propped up on an extra pillow lets your nasal passages drain more effectively. If propping your head on another pillow feels too awkward, try raising the head of your bed.

    How to stay on track with your mental and physical health

    Let’s face it.  We can have a plan, goals, and a routine for our fitness.  You find yourself sticking to it.  Then, something, occurs and almost unknowingly, before your eyes, you forget about your physical health because now your mental health has been greatly affected.  It’s not on purpose.  It starts off by skipping your workout because you are not  feeling up to it, or maybe even letting your nutrition become affected.  It doesn’t seem like much, however, it all takes a toll on our bodies over time.

    Women do well with having realistic goals and being surrounded by positive and fun activities.  However, women need the support of each other and being held accountable by each other, as this creates positive feelings about their accomplishments.

    Ethos is that place for women.

    If I can recommended just ONE strategy to stay on track…

    Put your goals and results on paper (or ipad) and write down how it makes you feel.  Feelings can be forgotten when you are in an unexpected or life-altering change in your life, and that can cause your health to spiral downward. You will find that what you wrote down will be more helpful when you are feeling “in a rut”.  Your mental health will directly affect your physical health.

    With that being said, women also enjoy and find success having one another to rely on.  Women make emotional connections with each other and look forward to seeing each other at Ethos. 

    Finally, a few words of advice for dealing with life’s challenges:

    • Get in check with yourself!  Take the TIME to do some soul-searching.
    • Discover the problem that is affecting your fitness.
    • Address it.  Decide on your plan of attack.
    • Solve the problem.  (Easier said than done.  Have daily affirmations to keep on track.  Allow yourself to have setbacks, but not to let it TAKE OVER YOUR LIFE.)

    Oh yeah, and if you can’t currently solve the problem, decide how you are going to deal with it head-on, so you can carry on your fitness routine.

  • Getting the Right Amount of Fat in Your Diet

    Most Americans eat too much of the wrong kind of  fat.  The public has been told by health officials that a low fat diet may prevent many diseases, but is it possible to eat too little?

    Fat molecules are responsible for important roles in the body such as hormone production, skin protection and brain function.  If a body has a particular fat deficiency for too long, menstruation may stop and the skin may become more susceptible to sun damage.   Additionally, concentration, focus and memory loss may occur.

    Extra virgin olive oil, nuts and seeds, egg yolks, fish, grass-fed organic animal fats, and saturated fats such as avocado and coconut oil are healthy and necessary in the right ratios and quantities.  A low fat diet very likely won’t contain all of the essential fats that the body needs.  People who eat very low fat diets often eat “Fat Free” products which contain laboratory-made fillers which have unknown consequences.

    As you analyze and assess your food intake, it is important to pay attention to the source and type of  foods.  Balance and variety are also a must.

  • Elena’s Favorite Exercise and Fitness Tip

    First, a favorite exercise should not exist.  A “favorite” for most of the trainees means – no effort during performance.  Your “favorite exercise” must be that one you hate – it is something your body needs to get better at! My favorite or most effective exercise targets the abdominal muscles and core. Because the core supports all human functions, it is the foundation of all strength.

    Start in a seated position knees bent, feet on a mat, torso should be inclined about 30-45 degree to engage abs muscles. Hold a medicine ball or weight plate in your hands. Choose a weight that will allow you to complete 20 reps. From the initial position, rotate your body with weight side to side, exhaling every time you twist .Do not follow the movements with your eyes look straight ahead. 

    Three sets of 20 repetitions and it will be your “favorite”.

    Trainer’s Tip

    Squeeze the targeted muscle on any exercise you do.  Hold the squeeze for 2-3 counts on top of the movement.  Repeat the squeeze for three sets of 12 reps. To achieve maximum results, focus on the location of the muscle and concentrate during the movement, in other words, make a “muscle-mind connection”.
